Yankees pitcher Luis Severino exits in 5th inning against Brewers with left side injury

Due to a left side injury, pitcher Luis Severino of the New York Yankees had to leave Friday night's game against Milwaukee in the fifth inning. He will receive diagnostic tests on Saturday.

When Severino gave up a leadoff single to Brice Turang on a 92 mph fastball, he doubled over in discomfort, dropped his glove in front of the mound, and then circled the field. After being examined by an athletic trainer and manager Aaron Boone, the 29-year-old was replaced by Jhony Brito because he was holding his left side close to his oblique.

With 29 fastballs, Severino averaged 96.1 mph, a little slower than his 96.5 mph season average.

Severino, who will be a free agent after this campaign, is 4-8 with a 6.65 ERA. Due to an injured latissimus dorsi muscle, he did not make his season debut until May 21.

Severino's contract, which pays him $55 million over five seasons in the option year, pays him $15 million.

He had a record of 19-8 in 2018 and was chosen as an All-Star for the second year in a row, but since then, he has made 45 starts and has a record of 13-12 with a 4.47 ERA. He injured a lat muscle in early 2019, delaying his debut until September 17. After making two more postseason starts, he underwent Tommy John surgery on February 27, 2020. After making three appearances after his September 2021 return, Severino missed two months of the next season due to discomfort in his right shoulder.
