September 11, 2:15 p.m. The SF Public Utilities Commission said that on Monday, a sizable sinkhole devoured a portion of Fillmore Street in the Cow Hollow district of San Francisco, not far from where a water main ruptured late on Sunday.

The neighborhood was inundated with water and debris when the rupture happened near Fillmore and Green Streets. Water flooded some street-level shops.

The SFPUC sent a statement shortly before 1:30 p.m. that said, "PG&E is on location to isolate a gas line inside the construction area." "Once they finish that job, personnel will start working again on the water mains. There will be sporadic water service to nearby structures all day. There are effects on traffic. Please keep away from the area if you can.

Sept. 11, 9:23 a.m. Following a water main break that caused water and debris to flood the neighborhood, a stretch of roadways in San Francisco's Cow Hollow was blocked on Monday morning, officials said. This had an effect on nearby businesses and caused traffic and public transportation to be disrupted.

It was a "big mess on the streets," according to Laurie Thomas, proprietor of Rose's Café on the intersection of Union and Steiner streets.

"There has to be a foot of mud in the roadway," Thomas added. "This morning, there was a truck stalled in the junction."

District 4 Supervisor Catherine Stefani said on social media that the collapse has shut off a section of the neighborhood between Fillmore and Steiner Streets and Union and Greenwich Streets.

Stefani said that "city employees are on the scene and undertaking in-person outreach to businesses and families impacted."

A 16-inch cast-iron water main, or pipe, that was built in 1949 broke near Green and Fillmore streets on Sunday soon before midnight, according to a statement released on Monday by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. Another major nearby was also affected.

Consumers in the neighborhood are reporting sporadic water service and brief service outages, according to the SFPUC. "Our staff are trying to quickly restore water service. At this time, no fire hydrants are impacted. You be urged to avoid the area if at all feasible since traffic in the vicinity is interrupted.

A number of bus lines are being rerouted, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said. Find out more about the organization online.

Thomas claimed that although her restaurant was not internally harmed, water inundated adjacent establishments including a nail shop. She's closed for breakfast and lunch, and whether she'll be able to open for the evening will depend on how quickly the city can clear the muck from the streets.

She added, "I'm going to have to absorb the financial damage." "I must close the establishment and compensate all of the patrons. Since it's so awful, the city needs to act quickly.

SFPUC said that 1,200 miles of water pipelines pass through San Francisco, 20% of which are cast iron pipes that are at least 100 years old. Water main breaks continue to happen despite a program to replace the outdated pipes being in place, with the system experiencing 100 to 200 breaks per year on average, according to the agency.

Note from the editor: On September 11, at 2 p.m., it was made clear that the water main break happened near Fillmore and Green Streets.
