Governor Newsom on the Passing of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein

Today, following the loss of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement:

Dianne Feinstein was a number of things, including a robust, pioneering U.S. Senator, a pioneer in the fight for gun regulation, and a strong voice in times of sorrow and anarchy. But to me, she was a close friend, a mentor for life, and an example of what a strong, capable leader should be to my wife and girls.

She was a political powerhouse whose elegance and persistence were equal. She overcame obstacles and glass ceilings but never wavered in her support for political unity. She also fought for the nation, state, and city she cherished. Her tale wasn't just about becoming the first woman in a specific political position; it was about what she accomplished for California and for America with that authority when she gained it. She made history in every election she won. She ought to be recognized for it.

"There was just no one with the poise, seriousness, and tenacity of Dianne Feinstein. Her departure has severely upset Jennifer and me, and we will be there for her family during this trying time.

In honor of Senator Feinstein, the governor directed that all state flags be flown at half-staff.
